Race win for UAE national

Wed 17 Jan, 2007 1:23 AM GMT

DENVER, 17 July (AP) - UAE national Jamal Al Sweihan has become the first Arab to win the World Speed-SMS Championship in Denver, Colorado.

Al Sweihan beat contestants from thirty other countries in to write and send an SMS message in just 4.6 seconds while driving at 220kmph.

He narrowly missed out on a gold in the slalom event after receiving a two-second penalty for abbreviating "you're" to "ur".

The Abu Dhabi resident puts his success down to regular training sessions.

"I train for two hours each day, up and down Sheikh Zayed highway, I send maybe three hundred messages during this time," Al Sweihan said.

"But in the UAE it is more difficult because you must have one hand free to flash the headlights at the car in front, but in the race you can have both hands on the phone."

Al Sweihan's next challenge will be next month's International MMS Rally in Kuala Lumpur.

obviously its not true. but i wouldnt call it a joke. what shes trying to imply is.. this is what its leading to and these are the underlying thoughts among ppl behaving in this manner. probably.

Harsha, I doubt she is implying that this is what it is leading to.

Obviously you have never driven down SZR going towards Jebel Ali at 1800 :p

PS- Am hoping that you were being sarcastic and forgot the [sarcasm] [/sarcasm] tags. Additionally it is possible for people to hit those speeds in the evening rush hour, as some idiots ,(idiots of every ethnicity) , speed on the hard sholder.

BTW SD, can I ask you out for a drink while am in sandland ?

I think a big give-away that the "supposed" news article is a joke is because the speed was reported in Kmph, whereas the speed in the US is measured in Mph (miles per hour). The record would have mentioned Mph or most likely both Mph and Kmph.

Hahaha nice! I think my "hijack" post a while ago may have triggered this one, SD :P

So what's your story? By the way, is it OK to fake news items by taking the name of a respected organization as AP? If not, I think you might be at more risk than a baddu driving at x > 200 km/hr on Shaykh Zayed Road!

I still think the worst kind of drivers are to be found in the Ras Al-Khor/Rashidiyyah area!

AP? Respected? But that's Western, isn't it? Mebbe you meant Al Jazeerah?

Who says Western news outlets or anything else Western cannot be appreciated?

You look for too many demons in me! I just try to call it as it is.
