Sources of strife
It's not often there is news from the Sleeping Emirate of Umm Al Quwain, so it is rather disappointing that the most recent tale is one showing the police in an extremely dishonest and amateurish light:
"Abid received a phone call yesterday morning from an employee at the Umm Al Quwain Police Department, telling him that a press conference will be held at the department's office and he must come to cover it.
"He found out that he was tricked, after being questioned and asked to disclose his sources. Abid refused to do that, in line with the ethics of journalism, which require him not to disclose his sources.
"He asked the police to issue an official statement if the information published were not true, but the police told him it was true, and they only need to know the sources for internal reasons."
Time to raise your game, Quwaians, now Dubai is buying you out.

Unfortunately this could have happened in ANY of our fair Emirates.
We are not, after all, living in an entirely “free world” over here….

I guess our Virgin Nostradamus was inadvertently correct. Dubai will become bigger than the UAE.
What Gulf News really needs are some investigative journalists. That article was lacking in pertinent details one would expect from such an article.
I'm curious as to what was in this "report" that this guy wrote that got him in trouble.
shaper85, i agree with u. that's exactly what i was thinking. what could cause the UAQ police to use shady 'techniques' to get a journalist to come to the police dept.
Nope, revealing details of the story would shift you to the newspaper that published it in the first place. Why would GN shoot itself in the foot, when they're supposed to be in charge of the army tank? Ever since they published those ABC figures proclaiming this and that.
Gulf News does not compete with Al Khaleej. The reporter is from the Arabic newspaper Al Khaleej, so it was safe for GN to mention details or just a brief on the feature in question.
