A bug's life
An academic associate recently had to call in pest control to her villa. As she describes it:
"It was the usual set-up - one bigger brown man in charge of two smaller brown men. One of the smaller men started spraying the industrial pesticide around the cupboards, but he wasn't wearing any protective clothing."
Worried, she suggested to the bigger man that his colleague should be wearing a mask.
"Oh, he's been doing this for so long, it won't make any difference to him now," came the reply.

Brown men, small brown critters, they are all considered, expendable / replacable / temporary commodities back there.
So true sd.
So why are they worried about plastic cups?
From what I've heard, stryrofoam itself is carcinogenic in the long run.
Doesn't it just make you shudder every time you hear the term "Labor Camp?"
"But it's okay," they say, "they're much better off than they would be in their home countries..."
Agh!
Maybe they go by the theory of insects becoming immune to the pesticide if sprayed too much - applying on humans.
off topic:
upon reading this in GN, immediately visited this blog if it is discussed here. just want to ask your opinion on this issue because this is my first encounter on a case like this.
"The Public Prosecution will press charges of attempted suicide against the woman[herself]."
Suicide is still a crime here, like it was in the UK and Europe earlier last century before we became more englightened.
I think they are beginning to treat these sad cases with greater leniency though. The realisation is dawning that prison is not the best place for a very troubled, usually mentally ill person.
Last century? thanks for the prompt reply SD, just want to have a follow up question. what is the punishment for this offense, DEATH penalty?
oh poor "kabayan", in trying to escape from illegal detention, she still end up behind bars. she should have worn C4 backpack and blew herself in her suicide attempt, at least she will end up a mujajidin not a criminal.
Jail usually I think, but months not years. And possibly a fine?
this is sad indeed.. why dont they look at the cause of the problem and her reason to take this extreme step :(

No one cares; she is a temporary worker and can be replaced easily. She’s being punished because her employer would have had to spend money hiring a new one.

hahaha raccoon! Sarcasm tags! That really would help bloggers!
the disparity of lifestyles in Dubai is starking...
When will we see an expose on 'How the other half lives'? - in Dickensian Dubai
Apparently they even re-use the helmet and uniforms of the construction workers who fall weekly to their deaths. I guess its more cost effective given that their helmets are probably worth at least a month's wage.
Kind of off-topic but this is good news for a change.

Yay ministry! (For once!) I thought this rule would come to nothing when it was first announced.
