"My hubby is a druggy"

Idiot of the week must go to Judy, the wife of "Indian fashion designer and choreographer" Prasad Bidappa. Bidappa has been arrested at Dubai Airport for carrying two grams of marijuana.

Not only is Judy so naive that she openly admits to a reporter that her husband is a drug user:

"On whether she is aware that Prasad smokes marijuana, she said: "Yes. Once or twice a week. My husband will never carry marijuana to Dubai. It is not a deliberate act. It was a mistake, he is kicking himself for not cleaning his bag," said Judy who is yet to contact the Indian missions in UAE."

but she also frets about how many "days" he will be detained in Dubai. It won't be days, Judy. It won't even be months. Unless some massive strings are pulled - and given your nationality that's unlikely, as there are hundreds of Indians languishing in Al Wathba for far less serious offences - it will be YEARS.

A lawyer is usually a better person to speak to in these matters, Judy, than a reporter. Admitting to a newspaper in a Middle Eastern country with a zero-tolerance policy on substance abuse (let's not forget Codeine Tracy) that your hubby is a druggy is the quintessence of fuckwittedness.

You may also be interested to learn that cannabis is illegal in your own country. India is a signatory to the 1961 Geneva convention on narcotics and passed the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in 1985, which outlaws a large number of narcotic agents including cannabis.

Cheerio Mr Bidappa, enjoy working on that tan in Wathba. Id like to be there to see what happens, I can imagine Judy walking into the police department, expensive clothing and jewlery, expecting to get back her husband.

Drug peddlers deserve no sympathy, lock him up and throw away the key. (In singapore, china or Malaysia, he would probably have been executed)

Well - he wasn't actually peddling it - he only had a tiny amount which would be for personal use. He was just very, very stupid. I don't really feel that anyone deserves to go to jail for years for stupidity/carrying a tiny amount of cannabis.

Still, given how strict the laws are here (anywhere in fact, when it counts as "importing" - ie bringing in from overseas) there is a huge need to take care.

It still never fails to amaze me about people’s stupidity, be it the 2 grams of grass or the heroin brought in to pay for a holiday. The system here is good at catching the naive and the stupid.

Not seen any photos in Gulf News recently with dejected miscreants and the goods in front of them with a caption of “Thieves to be brought to trial”. Good job there isn’t a jury here ;)

Also surprised there isn't a Site Blocked route to the Al Wathba link!

Oh, there will be. Just give it time. They've even blocked Google: Translate now (despite the fact that even when it worked, you still couldn't translate banned pages, so I don't see what the need for a total ban was).

Just use the HTML encoded version, thats always what i do when i want to see an Israeli site (use google, search then click on "View as Html".)

Now regarding Al Wathba, I think recently a group of international monitors was given a tour around the UAE prisons and deemed it as satisfactory (not sure).

Sorry but having lived in Amsterdam for more than a decade I see nothing wrong with occasional use of mary jane. Of course, she should not have brought any to the UAE because it is not legal but saying that smoking pot is a terrible thing to do is over the top...

I sincerely beleive that the only reason Pot and weed are illegal today is because Phillip Morris did not roll 20 joints in a pack and label it Marlboro Highs.

Whatever. Cannabis should not be classified in the same bracket as heroin and crack. It is less harmful than nicotine and alcohol, and certainly less addictive. The only danger might be that if you smoked it in combination with tobacco you could become addicted to tobacco.

1. Marajuana kills off brain cells, and has many short term effects on the brain.
2. It impairs judgement
3. Leads to Laziness and excess food consumption
4. People who usually sell this stuff sometimes lace it with acid, cocaine, or other addictive substances
5.Marajuana is a usual stepping stone to other drugs, amongst them cocaine and heroin, people usually dont go straight to coke.

How about issuing permits to people over 21? If it can work for alchohol, why not Marijuana?

Anonymous. There are some things you don't share on a public blog. Not leaving your name doesn't make that much difference, the police like catching locals.

For the record, I am not logging people's IPs (I don't even know if I can). But the government here is probably able to - so please people, be careful about guarding your online privacy.

Excerpt from deleted post above (deleted at poster's request):

Emirati, your reductionistic statements are not congruent with your obvious intelligence, and I ask that you keep an open mind rather than regurgitate the US's anti-marijuana propoganda.

To wit:

All of the statements you cite have been proven false time and time again. Except for maybe #2. But in your case, lowering your judgement may be a good thing.

Wa 3alaikum salaam.

Love your blog and espacially this post. Just one thing - as Mr. Bidappa has just proved (can we call him P.Biddy now?!) - the Indian Government DOES seem to have some influence - he's back where he came from now!

Haha, I have to say one of the best blogs I've read in a little while. Came across it when I googled Hash, Dubai and marijuana.
All I can say is it definitely doesn't belong in the same category as heroin or cocaine. Nicotine in cigarettes and alcohol does more damage in my opinion. Ofcourse I use all three, though I'm trying to quit cigs. I used to live in Dubai and when I come back for a month or so I can easily "survive" without pot and maybe even alcohol if I wanted to, but not without cigs. Anyway I now know that hash is much more available in Dubai than I originally thought and as long as its kept out of the hands of kiddies I'm cool with it. Cigarettes though should be banned.....

aloo ki chat, i know another who mistakenly took a minute amount of ganja to there by mistake. Also Dallas Austin been there too. I am intrigued to the outcome. 1st i like to say in india it is a relious thing for the sadhu. 2nd it is true tabacco is more harmfull and alchohol even more so. The world view of indiginous herbs is set by the eurocentric anti christ killers of europe and the us. The un are their legitimizer but everyone knows the evil done by us and uk. War is murder and blair and bush are guilty. How long will it take for us to wake up and stop being told what to do by the white westerner? they made aids they sell sex they encourage drunken orgy they make nuclear bomb they are the devil and now dajjal has come it is time to get ready to do right and be strong for the good of the creation, agram of herb is insignificant, free the slave show mercy .

For all you ignorant people that live in Dxb and say MJ is a drug that screws you up more than alcohol, you might want to do some research b4 talking crap. I lived in dubai for over 10 years smoked hash everyday for the past 20 odd years and its not something that makes you stupid, i can tell you that because of my occupation... im a DOCTOR... yes some of you might find that strange and think that i am completely oblivious but the fact of the matter is local bedus are dumb ppl that follow KSA which is a few hundred centuries behind. I just cant understand why ppl that have never tried hash or weed would even comment on this. First come out of your cacoon like life because this is the only one u will ever have.. and enjoy all of gods creations... Emirati u sound like a dumb@## thats 15 yrs old, how can u be peddling such a small amount which is worth Dhs.20 or so..
that would make him a very rich man eh..
It makes me laugh when i read such comments as u have prostitution legal and u can drink ur life out and buy the same drugs all over niaf and rigga street but if some expat accidentally forgets a small amount in his pocket it is called "trafficing", why dont you arrest the bedus and somalis that are selling it... because the shurtas make money of it.
