Powers of darkness

Dubai swelters as never before - or at least since the pre-oil days - as a cable fire knocks out power to most of the Emirate. Businesses shut down around lunchtime, people head for whichever shopping malls are rumoured to still have air-conditioning, and there are reports of "erratic driving" on the roads.

So really, no change to a normal Dubai day.

And here at Cell Block G, things are as cool as a cliched cucumber. Electrons stream happily through all the sockets, the A/C roars and this week's food rations are keeping nice and cool in the fridge. If only electricity could be bottled and sold, one could run quite a profitable little racket.

If only we lived in car-stles!!

It happened to us in Doha. The electricity failed at 4 in the morning in June and everybody in the 'compound' migrated into their cars - engines idling and AC running!!

This is because of faulty old equipment and badly trained technicians and engineers. WEA has to get its act together, but of course, remember this has happened in the US before (2004 Blackout, Northern US & Canada)

It's a worldwide problem. They seemed to get power back quite quickly to most areas - I was never affected luckily.

Getting caught in a lift for hours wouldn't be fun!

Dubai is expanding way too rapidly for its infrastructural and support system to keep up. Expect many faults in the Water, Electricity and Possibly even the telecommunications grid to come. Personell and resources will not be able to keep up with this expansion, My being an Engineering Trainee I would know about these sorts of things.

Abu Dhabi (My Emirate) expanded way too fast between 1996 and 1998 and the power crisis in some areas was like Yemen or Baghdad or Lebanon or any wartorn place.

In the Shahamah Area water is brought in trailer trucks because the pipes cant transport enough to meet demand.

Personally though these idiots ruined my plans for thursday night (Planned to goto Dubai but communications needed to plan trip with friends in dubai were cut because of the power crisis)
