Cloak of Darkness
Newspapers in the UAE frequently syndicate international features that have about as much relevance to residents as a pennyfarthing to a lobster. One such example is a Financial Times article on how women are "abandoning the one-coat fits all mentality":
"A straw poll of women yields the following information: most have between 12 and 20 coats in their wardrobe; most buy at least one new coat a season (this can mean four a year); most have clear-outs every five or 10 years to make room for new acquisitions."
A straw poll of inmates at Cell Block G reveals that just one single, lonely coat hangs in the wardrobe. Nor is it the the "short Dior alligator coat" or "long fur trimmed one by Andrew Gn" that the FT enthuses over.
It is instead a fifty-dirham anorak bought several years ago at Carrefour supermarket for a last minute trip to wintry northern Europe, that is used precisely once a year. This weekend it will again fulfil its annual role of comfort, warmth and economy on a trip to arctic London, where it will sneer with snug, smug nylon disdain at its costly, coatly cousins.

i have this really nice leather jacket which i only wear only when i leave dubai during the winter - sometime i miss winter cloths like turtlenecks, pullovers .. etc
one leather jacket (very old, unused and with another 20 yrs life on it).
Chevy - provided it comes back into fashion ;)
Keefieboy has one waterproof quilted jacket bought two years ago at Doncaster Market when a sudden downpour proved too much for his blazer. It cost a tenner.
Emirati's blog has dissapeared?? am i correct? if you are here somewhere...pls comment Emirati.
Settle down, SD; whether or not the people reading these articles are of the kind who refresh their coat collections every season is less important than whether they actually want to read about it. And we're talking about Dubai, the proud world-leader in wasteful consumer consumption. The more interesting point, I think, is how these articles are presented as 'Dubai articles' until you see the little 'Daily Telegraph' written in italics below. This is not helpful. The syndicated articles are important so that the in-house writers at least have something to aim towards.

anonymous @ 11:30, emirati's blog has dissapeared along with his username, he tried to delete many comments he wrote on others blogs.
dont know what happened, sent an email to SD bout it.
samuraisam, I was making a point about the incredibly fickle consumerism in Dubai. I didn't mean to present it as an actual stat! Sorry for making you search high and low for it.
Anon@10:51...\i never follow fashions and am quite sure the jacket was not in fashion when i bought it (deep dark market in Ankara, Turkey 1986).

Bon voyage and enjoy London!
samuraisam; yeah fake stats piss me off too. On another note, is it illegal to use a different proxy in Dubai? Is Skype actually illegal to use? I'm sure there's a place to find all this out but I don't know where it is...

On the subject of Skype, a couple of my family members in the UK have been able to make incoming calls to my landline. But don't tell EatYourSalad.

The problem with Sk*pe is that you can't recharge your account from the UAE - that Web page is utterly blocked. But that doesn't stop others overseas for doing it for you...
Other VOIP works here, though, including Callserve and Yahoo Messenger (using its voice feature).
Since we'll soon have a ski area to parade our fashions around in, break out them wool coats! Come November, the height of fashion will be to parade around the Mall o'Emirates in your winter gear.
Me, I'm planning to clump around in ski boots, wool cap and gloves and tinted goggles until it opens. Although driving is a bit challenging, _everyone_ will know I'm cool!

Coming from New Orleans, I just can't understand having more than one coat. I just got my very first "New" coat of my entire life (I am pushing thirty) this year.
Some people really have ten or twenty coats? *blinking*
