Stick 'em up

There's something rather quaint and charming about this little tale of druggery and domestic woe:

ABU DHABI — The Umm Al Quwain Criminal Court has sentenced Saeed, a UAE national and a drug addict, to four years in jail for beating up his father and attacking law enforcement authorities.

Following a complaint lodged by Mattar Saeed, the father, that his son had beaten him up, a police patrol rushed to the house only to find a restive Saeed wielding a huge stick.

In downtown LA or the crime-ridden ghettos of Detroit, Saeed would most probably have been brandishing a large knife or sawn-off shotgun. Here in the UAE a good old-fashioned big stick does the job.

"...a restive Saeed" ... I'm always intrigued at the phrases used to imply things in the local newspapers. So he was - restless? agitated? brandishing? attacking? Apparently, but "restive" is an oddly passive word to use.

And, yes, it's a good thing he didn't have an AK.

"restive" is KhaleejTimesSpeak.

If you can dig out an early Victorian era dictionary, you may be able to decipher what they mean by it.

a huge stick is as dangerous as any other weapon. we want improvement in our society but we should never lose logic.

Presumably he was still in a foul mood and liable to be provoked.

Semantic heaven.
