Hooker, line and sinker

What a fascinating list of excuses this allegedly robbed former Yugoslav soldier comes up with as to why he was in a hooker's flat in the first place.

His lawyer claims he's still "suffering mentally" from the war in Kosovo.

He claims he was "simply looking for furnished accommodation".

And according to 7Days, he just wanted forty winks:

"They went to her apartment for a rest, where he said he was shocked when she took off her clothes and asked for sex. He told the court he refused and left the apartment, but realised he had lost 4,000 euros."

That works out at 100 euros per wink. Or should the spelling of that last word be slightly different...?

ooh that place - Once I was with my family in Al Ain center (next to the same spinneys) after dinner when we headed out to the car (which was parked among several other 4x4)there was this line up of hookers - so many of them! as my dad unlocked the car from the mall entrance - All of them turned towards the car, the second we neared the car they had this dissapointed look on their face and each one turned back to a 4x4 each...

My questions are fairly simple...or are they?
- Who sponsors these ladies? Is there like a racket where someone with enough wasta gets their visas issued?
- Is the head pimp a high-end somebody with enough moolah to go around?
- Do hotels like Yoik National in Bur Dubai offer them enough visit visas?
- And why do cops always look the other way with them around?

Balushi,

How much of your life do you spend either in or researching the trudges of society? Seriously, I don’t think I’ve heard from a person with a larger collection of trash stories and experiences in my life. Do you have time for anything else?

Ahmed, that’s the EXACT point I tried to make to Balushi a few days ago. He just doesn’t get it.

Now on about them prostitutes near Ramada; I’ve got some useless trivia for you.

The Chinese ones will even take on women clients if you offer them “American” dollars.

For shits and giggles a friend of mine and I stopped three of them and faked an attempt to ‘pick them up.’ Two out of three were interested.

Whoever said there’s no entertainment in Dubai, simply wasn’t creative or courageous enough. We giggled about this one for months!

It's simple, Sin.

The answer is lots of wasta, and those running the rackets are above the law.

Plus, it's good for tourism! :-)

NZM, I have a friend in DXB Police who once hinted that the cops look the other way becasue if sex is freely available, sex crimes would be under control...i had no idea what to say after that...

Theres was a new building that came up in our area and was immediately occupied by hookers.that building was like a brothel. There were always fancy cars around our area, one of my friends called up the cops and told them about the building emphasising its a residential area and some action be taken.

The reply he got was : they are free to sell anything they like.

for those in the free zones, check out www.hetq.am.

Click on the trafficking link on the bottom right and you will see a great investigative report on Dubai's flesh trade and some insinuations about who are behind it.

This is the bit in the story I liked:

M. confessed that she is a sex worker and that she slept with E.O. but denied stealing his money.

She said he forgot the cash in her flat and she gave it to her boss to return it.

Many of these people come here on tourist visas, or pay a local sponsor to sponsor them. The police dont stop them becuase theyve arrested innocent people before and caused themselves some embarassments, I certainly dont appreciate the "blame the local" campaign. A 50% tint will set you back 80 dirhams, and anyone can get it for a night in one of these Areas. People are willing to go 160, in a 120 km zone, you think they wouldnt tint their windows ?

What's the penalty for being caught (for both male and female)...And, is there any organized effort to catch offenders that you know of?

22 March, 2006 03:16

As far as I know the penalty varies in all cases and between genders. The penalty for a woman is often slightly more severe than a man, but conditions such as marital status alter the outcome either way.

Jail and lashings are normal punishments for both sexes regardless of race, and foreigners are deported after serving their time.

It also depends on which Emirate they’re arrested in, as punishments do vary.

And I’m not sure about Dubai, but I know Sharjah CID sets up ‘sting’ operations to catch prostitutes. But since it's always an undercover male offering to 'hire' services in the sting Ops, only the those offering the offensive services are caught, and not those purchasing.

I'm American (in America). I came to read this blog because a friend of mine is now working in Dubai. I find it all a bit fascinating.

It sounds like there is a huge tolerance of western culture (or rather, behavior) in Dubai (for the sake of economics), but that I should pity the poor western soul that is dumb enough to have his indiscretion spill out into the street.

In America, nowadays, with the internet, prostitution flourishes even more than before, yet is less visible. It keeps most of the activity off the street (and out of the bars). A street-walker will get busted immediately, but an internet based girl who advertises herself on the internet can operate for years with little or no trouble. The cops only get interested when there are complaints.

If the Dubai locals wanted to have the prositution problem less visable, and away from public places, all they need to do is stop censoring the internet. Within 1-2 years, the bar scene will vanish.

You know that is quite fascinating - I had never considered that.

Most large American cities had problems with street-based prostitution. The police forces had special "vice" squads that fought it. Now, most of the street-based prostitution is gone (only a few drug-addicted girls seem to do it). Few police departments employ more than a few people on Vice duty.

The police employ the "nail that sticks out, gets hammered" phiolosophy towards dealing with it: Don't be so obvious, never be brazen, and keep a generally low profile. Keep it out-of-sight from your neighbors. A lot of the full-time girls even pay taxes on their illicit earnings by claiming to be self-employed in some other manner. I would not say that prostitution is free from problems, but it no longer occupies as large a portion of the nation's "mindshare".
