The land of white suits

Tourist tip: if you're planning to enjoy Dubai's nightlife, don't forget to abide by the dress code, or you're likely to be refused entry in many places. Wear a white suit.

A white suit. Not a brown suit and definitely not a black suit, that's completely unacceptable in most venues.

Doesn't matter how rich you are, or how presentable, or how important: white suits only please. Men and women. Thank you for your time.

What if the bouncers refuse to let me in, giving feeble excuses such as, 'Members only,' or 'Couples only,' while people in black or brown suits waltz past me into the club and the bouncer doesn't utter a word to them?
When I question why guys in black or brown suits are being let in, he says, 'They're regulars,' or they booked a table.'

GulfNews: Have you ever faced racism in UAE's NightClubs?

EVERY TIME!! That's how many times we face racism in UAE's Nightclubs. Even though I am fair, and most of my friends are from India, we (mixed groups) are denied entry at Dubai & Abu Dhabi nightclubs. It's absolutely fucking ridiculous. Sometimes we flash stacks of money to show these bouncers that we are monetary eligible to be entertained at their nightclubs. Its embarrassing and every good nightclub does this. My boyfriend personally tips the bouncers 100 bucks to remember his group of friends. How sad is that? DTCM needs to take severe action against all the high classy night clubs. We Indians have the money to buy you guys out and yet they treat us like trash. And if you ask any Indian, they will tell you the same thing, "Yeah! Only reservations or guests are allowed". But then you see flocks of white stags and couples walking in. It's frustrating and extremely embarrassing. Look at the nightclubs in Toronto or NYC. 100 times better than Dubai's night scene and yet very gracious to every colour of human race that walks in. And who causes the fights in Dubai clubs. The Arab men. But the brown people get the stop sign and the white people watch and laugh. Dubai is sick.

to the Indian lady (anon 27/5 18:01): The bouncers are almost certainly taking their instructions from their employers. The employers know that the “goras” (white westerners) prefer to be with their “types” (not all are bigoted, but quite a few are – anecdotally this seems to be the case). Racism has different manifestations and complex explanations. Among the Arab/Islamic/sub-continental world’s so-called educated elite there is a propensity to consider all things Western to be superior, even if what has been imported from the West is sub-par in all respects. This theme goes beyond nightclubs and is sadly part of life at the workplace here too. Some of us from this region (due to a post-colonial subservient mentality) actually end up encouraging an inferior Westerner (professionally inferior I mean) to act as if he is God’s gift to workplace. I am afraid many of your docile and malleable Indians/Pakistanis encourage this themselves. At work I watch with amazement how white Westerners are given preferential treatment. Case in point: an incompetent Brit with no university education (barely scraped through O levels) or relevant experience and who was probably a lower level clerk in London ends up being rapidly promoted and becomes a senior official in a financial outfit-- the highly educated Indian sod ends up being his grunt; there are scores of such examples. I often hear goras talking with great arrogance (perhaps compensating for their intellectual shallowness) about how they have come to train [“civilise”] this part of the world. At Western dominated expat professional functions, there is almost inevitably the same old banal, clichéd banter about “polygamist Easterners”, the horridness of the hijab, extreme cruelty to women etc etc… from their eloquent deliveries one would think that the West was Utopia. But we all know that isn’t the case. A reminder to such people that paedophilia, incest, rape, crimes against women etc aren’t exactly unheard of in the West makes them grunt and break out in sweat – no no…desis aren’t supposed to talk like that.

So Indian lady – that’s that way it is I am afraid. Things will probably change in due course but for some time to come second rate white Westerners/Aussies/South Africans will continue to be given superior treatment in this part of the world – at clubs and at work. Options: move back to India or head off to NY/LA if you find this too upsetting….. At least in America meritocracy prevails to a very large degree.

Really? Here's one who doesn't. And who would leave the club in digust if a group of Asian or African-appearance people were turned away when I was admitted.

The answer to this is not to start a whole load of let's-slag-off-euros. Remember who actually owns this country, who runs it, and who sets the policies. Regardless of a few deluded palefaces that might mistakenly think they're still in some colonial era with Trucial Scouts wandering around, in reality it sure as hell ain't whitey.

Anna - what an indignant riposte ... how convenient...first of all I'm not asking you to associate with me. That is rather presumptuous of you. Just try to understand that there are a lot of "Failed In London Trying Hong Kong" types around here. Top Western professionals don't easily leave their jobs in medicine, science, and research to come to this part of the world. Unfortunately (historically) the Gulf has attracted a disproportionately large percentage of baser intellectual/cultural types from the West who are more bigoted and upstartish – such people tend to unfortunately look down on their host cultures and societies. The lady from India isn't necessarily seeking western company (nor am I as I have many existing, extremely decent western friends who themselves feel grossed out by the tackiness and arrogance of their fellow countrymen), she was just trying to get into a nightspot and was expressing her frustration. What peeves me off is when some expats have the gall to act so holier than thou, mock their generous hosts, while being so culturally and intellectually undeveloped themselves Such people conveniently fail to look at the ills in their own societies. As a small example, just look around at all the obese middle aged white men running around with philipinos who could be their granddaughters. It’s so perverse. An Australian fellow I came across spares no opportunity to mock the host culture but then will unashamedly drive while totally intoxicated – something he’d probably be very scared to do down under. When hypocrites like these act so superior and become the champions of “civilisation” one inevitably develops a deep sense of nausea. There are a lot of cheap, tacky, supercilious types who get special treatment here (as in the clubs) just because of their colour/nationality, while the people like the lady from India feel discriminated against. Don’t know if you catch my drift – if not sorry – don’t have the time to make it clearer to you Anna.

( yeah right ... a regular how does not know whether there was a band or not!!!)
I spend the (ruined) night at a friends place fuming about racism in UAE ... ahh .. the memories of a good night gone bad.

Incident # 2 "Boston Bar" ( Jumeirah Rotana Hotel) entry restricted ... I ask why ? .. he says he does not like the way I look ( Just like that ... imagine!!) I ask what was wrong? ( I was dressed decently mind you !! .. A good shirt, Khakis and shoes.. all branded too .. lol ) he says .. nothings wrong.. just who I am ... and I walk out not wanting anymore trouble, past the pimple sprouting teenage pale-skins who stood there laughing at my humiliation ( such a joy..!!)
another night ruined..

there's more ... but I'll just wait..

And you'll have to go to Jimmy Dix on a saturday night to know that sub cons are pretty capable of bar room brawls. And fights aren't anything new....I bet clubs in the west or anywhere else in the world have their fair share of fights.

White women don't want losers like that. Philippinas and Chinese are for white men who can't get white women.

The really annoying thing is, if these clubs were in London, who wouldn't want to go to such crap venues. You only go to Rick Bottom etc because that's all there is.
Then you get some puffed-up steroid addicted bouncer acting as if he's at Fabric.
Just last month I asked one, 'Do you think you could stop me from going in there?' He never replied. :)

They are poor and dont bring prestige.

On the other hand, even an unemployed Caucasian high school dropout has an aura about him, and he is much more intelligent than an Indian PHd.

How do I know that? How come all Western countries are rich while India is poor? It is because Whites are smarter, more honest, and better in everything than even the smartest Indian. I challenge you all to prove otherwise.

To be fair anon @16:20, they quote the same initial price regardless I've found. I get charged as much as my white friends till I let them know that I know that the store down the street has it for half price or whatever. It is just bargaining.

As for clubs that discriminate:
"Hello Rock Bottom"
"Yeah, I was wondering what the cover was?"
"Oh, for Europeans and British Sir, no cover"
"....."
"Sir?"
"So you're racist then?"
"Ummm..no sir...I...*click*"

I'm western educated so I sound pretty damned white. Also I'm very fair skinned and dont look subcon, so I never get bothered anyway. I get into that place free, but I refuse to go. No point in throwing a few hundred a week at them when they think its ok to treat humans differently thanks to color/race.

Dear A Typical Racist,

Let me commend you on your forthrightness, and accuracy. Sub-cons truly do not deserve to be allowed into clubs. Or any establishment. I have long proposed an absolute ban on Sub-cons and any institution that hires them in high positions. My current list includes Berkshire Hathaway (CFO is brown), Goldman Sachs (shitloads of VPs are brown), Merrill Lynch (as above), Morgan Stanley, Pepsi (CFO is brown), Microsoft (dont even get me started), Google (as above), AOL (as above), Intel, Cis....

Just read up on any fortune 500 company. And then dont give them business so they can stop giving the jobs us hardworking people deserve to those useless brown people.

Additionally, I call for a boycott of all Ivy League institutions (Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Cornell, Columbia, Princeton, UPenn, Brown) and near-ivies (MIT, Stanford, etc) - they have over 30% of their student population as asians while asians only comprise about 2-4% of the US population. Clearly, they are getting preference.

Regards,
A fellow typical racist

Clubs found guilty of doing so may be charged up to Dh20,000 and face temporary or permanent closure.

Ahahahaha....kick me if I'm wrong; but this is the fucking problem here; we've got people complaining about racism and discrimination and frankly most of them are no better themselves.
Like our Indian lass who thinks she can "buy" people out.
Or the fella who called some westerner a "half-wit" all the while making assumptions that his companion was "pay by the hour".
How can you demand to be treated fairly, when you're as bad and probably worse?

And personally, boycotting makes no difference at all.
Like anyone's going to notice.
If my friends and I are ever denied entry, I demand to see the manager and I do not leave the bloody premises until I get in; because in all actuality, they never have any valid excuses not to let us in.

Walking away doesn't do shit....I'd rather stand and fight.

Del
LOL...how typical. Another person brings it up, and you follow. It still has no fucking relevance to this thread.

Besides, it takes TWO people to rumba....not like the young Filipinas were forced against their will, are they?

Since when did this become an attack on westerners?
Like SD said before; why don't you appropriate blame on the authorities rather than the clubgoers?

And about Boston Bar, you're all bloody deluded. Have you seen the crowd that goes there? Sure, there are a lot of white expats....but a sizeable number of subcons, arabs and filipinos too.
As for the single men who complain they're not allowed inside....I don't mind that rule at all.

And I'm sure a lot of ladies who've been perved on by lecherous men of all races, would wholeheartedly agree with me.

DEAR BLOGGERS,

here's a very real story, and i'd like to share it with all of you. this is not a very short msg unfortunately, but certainly no less interesting. i've read almost all the blogs posted here, so bear with me: the nightspot was at a rotana hotel. it was a mixed grp of ppl. all professionals working in lovely little Dxb, the men were all european featured, except Mr. J, who also just so happened to be the most appropriately dressed & had the greatest spending power, some women in the group were non-european, and unfortunately all in senior mgmt roles and all decently dressed. the irony of this story is that those who were discriminated against were urged to come along to the venue -Double Decker- on the basis that it was a great service experience. our european colleagues entered as a group of 4 males, another colleague followed seconds after, and was stopped and told he has to be a member or a couple-the classic phrase of a 300dhs/night supreme powered doorman (they call them bouncers here). so he sat waiting patiently for his female counterparts, funnily a large grp of white males with not 1 single female and all non-members because they were having their ID's checked, which also means they could've been underage, turn up at the grand gates. the profesionally trained doorman (or bouncer, if it's your part-time job) smiles and stands aside to welcome them in. so Mr. J walks up again and says are males alowed in now? and HRH bouncer says: NO! It's my own discretion to choose who i allow to enter!! fair enough, mr. j not realizing what's going on decides to sit and wait again. 5 minutes later the female colleagues arrive and greet mr. J and proceed to the grand gates of double standards-sorry i meant double decker. the ladies are questioned as though they have a price tag on their ear and mr. J is told he can't enter with them until he apologizes, but for what? for asking a question. the women are shocked, because mr. J's team just so happen to be the same people that host/entertain/cater to many of the high profile celebrities and highpowered 'visited dubai' names most of us only hear or read of the next day morning over coffee. but the doorman-sorry again i meant very powerful and highly trained 300dhs/night bouncer had his reasons. he doesn't like mr. j's complexion and he doesn't like the fact that mr. j was going to recommend the outlet to his guests when he is obliged to spend alot of money on keeping the dubai dream alive. :)

1. I have friends who asked to speak to the managers and they got half-assed rough-housed out of the place. If you're a female, they cant touch you, but a guy cant really pull that.
2. wrt the single guy issue @ bostons. the problem isnt that they dont allow single guys. its that they dont allow single guys of a particular race. I've never had problems at that place, but I always have 2-3 girls with me. I have had friends who werent allowed in though.

Well, if there's anything this post has shown me, it's that the people who are being excluded from these clubs can't seem to decide which of them - minority or majority - should be let in.

Naming and shaming also won't do a thing, as these establishments seem to be quite unaccountableas to the authorities.

Naming specific races as victims is also equally pointless, because for every generalization one provides, there will always be an exception from the 'favoured' race.

Rather, I'd like to see us all agree that discrimination - in any shape or form, whether encompassing ethnicity or financial status - is wrong and should be fought as fervently as possibly. And by fight,I mean, don't just refuse them your business. Let them know in no uncertain terms that their practices are totally unaccceptable; if you can't get in, kick up as much of a stink as you can before you go.

Otherwise, we all desereve to be kept waiting outside.

His excuse? It was couples only...apparently.

It's a shame really, because DD is a nice bar, and plays great eighties music.
And their drink deals are infinitely more reasonable than other places.

breast implants - missing a few important things.

The first point I agree with; men do have a tougher time trying to speak to the management. A feisty girl with you at all times should solve the problem.
I know that's half-assed, but I don't see how things will change unless the management starts treating its clientele with more respect.

As for the second point, I've seen arabs and caucasian men being turned away, and I do know that Boston bar really tries to keep the number of men in check.
Like Desertblog said, sometimes it's not always about race.

Remember, Boston Bar has FOUR drink vouchers for the women on Tuesdays and Thursdays. While Tuesday is ladies night pretty much everywhere else....it's rare to find a club or a bar which does that over the weekend.

Boston Bar wants more female clientele, isn't that obvious?
They should try harder though; staving off the pervs is becoming a chore.

Edit: I never censor my comments. Just added some stuff I thought was relevant

As a US resident who frequents Dubai often, it is interesting to see the neo-colonial caste system in place, which is economic and racial. They seem to go hand in hand, which is a significant problem in Dubai.

A German guy I work with in Dubai has started giving military rankings - the white suits are the generals, the white faces are expat first class, those who have browner faces with college degrees are expat second class, everybody else is expat third class, although there are probably some subcastes even there. Four basic classes of civilization in Dubai. America may have its inequities - but they seem so much more proscribed and institutionalized in Dubai.

But I would stop short of bashing Westerners in Dubai as people who have failed elsewhere - especially Brits. Simple equation: NO RAIN + NO TAX + HIGHER SALARY = WHERE DO I SIGN UP? Yes, there are many who would not have done as well if they had stayed in their home territories. But recall that before the late '80s, Britain was economically not a great place to be. Same with the US in the late 70's. Once people then came over to this little part of the world, the secret slowly seeped out and you got more people - some better folks than others, obviously.

Americans do not benefit so much - the Dubai prices for housing have far outstripped most US cities (except maybe the top 3 or 4 expensive cities).

So we can talk about endemic racism in Dubai - but it wasn't invented overnight. It took decades to change American mentalities. And there are still several regions in the US (usually away from the east and west coasts) where an attractive white guy and an attractive black woman, holding down good professional jobs, may have a particularly difficult time getting people to come to their wedding, and at the very least will get stared at when they come walking down the street or walking into a restaurant.

denied entry? OOOh sounds like fun!

Are those white suits supposed to be Linen? or does a white velour suit ala p. diddy count too?

And since we're talking about dress codes and entry and clubs and all .. How come the dress code for women these days is less is more at clubs in Dubai? Really I mean I don't want to see the bad boob job attached to your chest like half oranges glued on .. UGH .. or the flab falling over the side of those oh too tight pants and crop top that is caught somewhere between the unsupported bust and the first roll of 3 or four .. or the cellulite on the back of your thighs or the ass crak cuz you wore low rider's and wanted to show off the new g-string you bought from La Senza ..just cuz britney spears did it doesn't mean you can! I also definitely don't want to see men jumping around in what they think is cool but actually a borrowed look from last year's MEXX Spread or Truworth's. Seriously, you want to get in start dressing like you belong in there ..and while I'm on a roll .. Dubai is clicky ! Its the way it is .. When you try to not be clicky with people they still end up being clicky and back stabbing you .. at work .. while you're out .. having dinner .. lunch .. at the spa .. I tip the woman 30 dirhams after my hair cut and what do I get .. a stiff smile .. as if she's done me a favor .. I paid for the haircut and the manicure and I don't even get thank you please come again and when I do come again they don't remember me .. and I have to explain again that these are my real nails for the hundredth time .. serves me right should have stopped going after the second time it happened .. It's like everyone's got a chip on their shoulder .. I try to talk to the man that lives downstairs in our building and give him money to wash my car once a week .. he washes it the first time and never bothers again and takes my money .. I ask for 50 dirhams in gas the attendant fills it up with 25 and tries to stiff me for the other 25 saying maim you're done .. Takes my fifty and turns around and I wait for change .. Where's my change .. You don't get any .. You didn't fill it for 50 .. Yes I did .. You lying piece of XXXX You did not where's the indicator on the gas pump .. No sorry maim that's not yours .. RIGHT .. where's your manager .. DHL looses a shipment for a client and I have to pay 4000 dollars in losses and the sub-con individual on the phone doesn't have the sense to tell me it was lost when he should have instead its being delivered in two hours .. Give me a break .. and on the subject of whose got the money .. Its not about if you've actually got it or not .. I would have thought everybody here had already clued into this little game in Dubai its actually about whether you look like you've got it or not .. and Khakis don't say you've got it .. Nor do white suits .. linen or not .. It's your attitude .. Start carrying yourself around like you own this place .. you'll get some respect at the club .. Double Decker and otherwise ... Personally Double Decker is a big fat bore if it wasn't for the very cushioney and delightfully comfortable couches to sit on .. Stop making this about being Sub-con or not .. or white or not .. make it about what it is .. you flash like you have money you're someone .. doors open for you .. you don't you aren't .. and you're trying to cheat others out of it and make their lives a miserable hell .. just cuz you're bitter .. if you're a woman with boobs you're more likely to get your way but once in a while you'll run into a man that doesn't really give a crap if they're 34 D or 34 A. It's not racism .. It's servicing the greater good of clientele .. Why hang around in a place where sub-con are serviced the same as the supreme white master .. and the white master will always spend on his pleasures .. These places are ultimately servicing the long-term not the short term .. and please .. sub-con. India has its own little caste system going on .. I'm not one for racism .. but if you're going to whine withuot taking iniative .. and learn how to adapt .. get over yourself .. and since some chickie dee thinks shes got the money to buy us all out .. why don't you go ahead and do that .. you're skirt wasn't short enough and the dimwit you were with was wearing khakis (I don't care if they were by Steve Madden) Next time drive up in a ferrari maybe they'll let you in .. I know a hell of alot of people that aren't arab or white .. that go out and buy one beer and take all night to drink it .. Whine whine whine that's all I hear .. you got it a hell of alot better then you do elsewhere as do I .. but here's a tip from someone that's perfected the game .. money talks bullshit walks .. but what do I know .. I'm just a blonde that's only ever had to smile and squish her boobs together to get what she wants .. and flutter my eyelashes too ..

Incidentally Trader Vic's doesn't discriminate .. enjoy your nights out in Dubai ..

2) Budoir

Interesting.
I would like to point out that this is not confined to Dubai. Even back in India, there are a few pubs and bars which would let a white guy in without questions while stoppping their own countrymen! But these are isolated incidents at the most and does not reflect the overall outlook. If you take it in a broader context, say like in a workplace, it is much much worse in Dubai.
In other countries, generally your salary is determined by your skillset, experience and communication skills. But in Dubai, and this is considering my personal experience as well, the discrimination is only too evident. To cite an incident, I know of an Indian friend who has a professional events management degree, 3 years of solid experience and excellent communication skills being paid one third of her South African counterpart who has apparently a diploma in fashion technology and still heads the department(Events Management).
I think the root of the problem is the composition of the Dubai population itself. Most expats has come to Dubai (and this might be gradually changing) because they were not good enough professionally in their home country or simply to make more money - not to add value to their career or outlook. Let's face it, Dubai is anything but a 'melting-pot' of cultures- but rather a volatile mixture of cheap champagne and rotten aloo gobi maintaining an forced equilibrium inside an oil-soaked money bag.

I think we will all agree that racism exists the world over. The difference between a place like the US (And I hail from the South, one of the most racist places in my country) and Dubai is that at least there are laws against racism in the States and each generation that grows up with these laws slowly becomes more tolerant. Until the UAE adopts anti-racism laws and measures AND enforces them, there's no incentive for people to change their basest behavior. And this goes for a lot of the problems in this country.

Todays Gulf News has a Hani attacking its article and claiming racism is justified. If Hani is an Arabic speaker, his probable stance is even funnier: "Racism against sub-cons is justified but racism against Arabs is bigotry"

I think this whole article is shameful and should not have been published. The racism in this country is probably the lowest in the world. And all I see this article doing is firing-up racism between people and encouraging it even further. From my point of view, nightclubs are private businesses and not some sort of public parks made to amuse the public. The owners have every right to let-in or stop people in whichever way they see serves the interest of the business. I hope not to see such articles in your newspaper in the future as it is only gives negative impressions about your newspaper and the country.

Its a shame that us white coats are so tolerant of this practice here. As someone once said, racism is a reflection of the evolution of a society. Father lives in Dubai... I'm in the UK and have been to Dubai many times.
I'm white but my Brother-in-Law is Jamaican while the whole family was out in Duabi and we went out in the evenings, he would almost always get told he couldn't go in to anywhere we went.
Fact was, he has a great demeanour and could talk his way in but a couple of times he got a really racist response from door-men.
It is just the way Dubai is - the expat community was predominantly white in the early days (there were lots of asian workers but they got bought in cheap and didn't get to run shoulders with the important Arabs). So the white folk got to make things their way.
I dunno - it is like bigotry anywhere, there is just no state control and no recourse for complaint in most cases.
Dubai seems to like the halfway house between Arab and Western culture but it has to take on a more global attitude to other cultures also.
Not much else you can do to be honest, just be nice and polite and, if you are turned away, go and complain to the management immediately. Just make sure you are ploite and calm and they will be the ones who will mess up and get themselves in trouble.

1. Rock Bottom - Owned by an indian .. manager is an indian.. so are the bouncers. but they behave as they are arabs.. dunno why they think they are cool by that... they are also the rambos of the club willing to fight and abuse people.

2. Jimmy Dix- owned by pegasus holding by a bloke called Imtayaz Panjwani also an indian divorced... dates has a fetish for divorced indian or brit women... his bouncers nitin... x bouncer of rockbottom.. ( well the whole staff is of rock bottom) is also a fighter... big black guy thinks he is a brit too...
3. boston Bar - dont know the name of the chick that runs it.. but ssupports her bouncer even if he is out of line and arrogant... and abusive. Lets only white girls dance on the bar on thursday nights...

4. Double Decker - new place same owner as boston.. ( rotana) its a pub.. for crying out loud.. not a night club.. but they have night club polocies... funny..

back off of Arabs and Lebs .. Del you have no clue what you're talking about .. Dr. Phil hasn't exactly released his license to bullshit yet to you ..

save the pyscho babble bullshit for the people that actually know how to talk it ..

Miss Money Bags - Whose money is it your flashing? Your daddy's or your boyfriend's? and since you have so much of it and can buy us all out ..open your own club .. name it Indians only and say no to whoever you like .. and I can certainly name a few bars and clubs in canada and the states where only select fair skinned people are allowed in .. so don't go harping about how its so much better out there .. if it is why the hell are you here then .. and yes maybe my arab men are stupid on occasion but they aren't taping me with a digi cam while I'm lying on the beach unsuspectingly .. its the indian guy with his hands down his pants .. so don't go knocking arabs or lebanese people .. We have our own little spots and I'm sure you don't wanna come join in on our little parties ..

and while I'm putting everyone in their place ..

Ding dong - Rock bottom isn't for servicing the greater clientele of Dubai its for the crew cut blonde heads that are here in transit - going in and out .. they neither have the time nor money to hit Barzar or similiar places ..and the locations of where they are put up for 3 or 4 days they are here are suspiciously close to Rock Bottom - put two & two together - as for Rotana bars .. try buying a boss suit with a rolex (fake or real - optional) and a money clip and get a proper hair cut with some proper gel in there .. shower and scrub really well before you go out ..spray on some of that Davidoff y'all are fond of and I assure you with some shiny new black shoes, a nice looking friend or two, your best smile and all the confidence in the world you'll walk right in .. if that doesn't work .. can't help you if you're walking in with a look on your face saying you're expecting to be discrimated against .. and no I don't mean to insinuate anything about hygiene with my comments .. spend as much time as half the other people of this town in front of the mirror and on your wardrobe .. you will get in ..

But once again .. what do I know .. I DONT JUDGE PPL BY THEIR RACE OR COLOR OF THEIR SKIN AND STEREOTYPE .. I'm just a blonde that gets what she wants .. grow the hell up and stop blaming everything on the color of your skin .. everybody gets the short end of the stick at times and if you can't deal and you need to resort to naming and shaming other people for their behaviour instead of rising above it and adapting .. you aren't much better ..

Does anyone remember Gspot or Pillatzo's in Toronto?

How about Tao in NY? Butterfield 8 in Chicago? It happened right in front of my eyes .. and discrimination is discrimination whether it be because of what you're wearing or the color of your skin or how much money you have .. its still discrimination ..

as for the nationals and the harrassement ... throwing your number or following around a woman in a mall is not nearly as perverted as taping a woman in a bikini on the beach without her consent ..

as for the local women in hords and something about deer in the light look in their eyes .. no remember it is their country ..

they can basically do what they want .. we should adapt no?

hence the coining of the term wasta?

as for the opinion on everyone .. I haven't knocked one race down yet or insulted any of them .. be it indian or white or arab .. on the contrary the sarcasm put forward was to highlight the ridiculousness of this all land please don't think something that isn't .. quite frankly .. we're all from adam and eve .. and I have reservations against anyone that can't see beyond the appearance of someone and look for the truth in there .. that doesn't mean national man or indian guy finger happy behind his new camcorder or loser that got denied entry at double decker can go around saying that arabs and lebs are suffering identity crisis and think he made a proper statement .. nor can the other loser going on about white supremacy think its cool .. nor can miss money bags think its nice to say yes i'll buy you all out ..

but people will be people .. so rummy john .. don't call me babe .. have fun with the KKK .. it certainly isnt the KKK today anymore but it definitely is the corporate america running on a full fledged war on 'terrorism' in the name of democracey in and out of the states .. entry into clubs hardly constitutes a measure by which to determine the openmindedness, fairness, and democracey of a country

You want to talk about racism .. let's see .. two years ago Air Canada denied boarding to one of the most famous cartoonists out there .. why cuz he was pakistani .. what did the Liberal Party do about it? Nothing? What did Air Canada tell him? No explanation? Mr NDP party took his case to a national level and then it got all the publicity it needed to make an issue out of it ..

Do not lecture about the west being more open minded .. just cuz they gladly let you spend your hard earned money on over priced and watered down alchohol .. without making a big deal if your brown or black or not .. it doesn't mean that everything's just rosey ..

and Del .. I'm blonde yes but I can obviously run my mouth a mile a minute .. and yet .. I haven't offered my 'expert analysis' on why I think customer service is so fucking lacking in this town ..

and you want an opinion .. here's one .. Dubai is the way it is because this is remnants of a colonoial society once dominated by British imperialism .. its trickled down and left some of its not so nice characteristics with us .. and it continues to be fueled because only a select few have the money in their hands while others are rotting and scraping trying to make a buck .. it doesn't mean the gas attendant can try to stiff me out of 25 dirhams and it also doesn't mean you can put your 100% on the job .. here's another opinion .. Sub-continental people here can't drive for shit ..

How's that? the point of each one of my posts was to say that there are ALOT more important issues going on around us then entry into a night club being determined by what color you are .. for example - when was the last time any of you donated their time to charity?

enough said ..

Dear All-

This has been a very (if I may use the word) "entertaining" exchange! I have the following to add from my side (by the way, I am not the bar/pub types):

1- Desert_dude made a LOT of sense. All power to this brother! It's been some time since someone here has presented his/her case coherently. Plus, it was well-articulated and very unbiased. Desert_dude I hope you dont mind me saying this, but please dont get me wrong: a person of your intellect doesn't need to be going to such places.

2- What a shame that we are arguing about racism in places that are Islamically prohibited in a MUSLIM country!

3- As the anonymous blond aptly puts it, there are more pestering issues in the Dubai today than racism at clubs and bars. As a Muslim, it really saddens me to see this state of affairs.

4- Anonymous blond, the West is liberal and open-minded! Don't you know they are now coming up with a political party of pedophiles in one of the European countries? Freedom, anybody? First homosexuality became an accepted thing, and now we have pedophiles coming out in the open for their share of "freedom". Like I once said in one of the threads here bestiality is the next thing that the "free world" will gladly accept!

5- As many people have noticed, people attacking racism are doing it more racism! I hope I am not the only one who notices how FAKE people here are.

How many of us know what is going on in Iraq and East Timor? Did anyone notice the earthquake that hit Indonesia some time back? Or are we all too busy planning for our weekends in one of these places and how to combat racism therein?

Those places are not Islamically prohibited yet one sees racism there, albeit not many get refused entry as in bars.

2- What a shame that we are arguing about racism in places that are Islamically prohibited in a MUSLIM country!

Al Republican...tsk, tsk
The UAE, being an Islamic country allows nightclubs, bars and alcohol. Even during Ramadan.
They could ban them if they wanted to, but they haven't.
So...AL....you have no argument. If you have an issue with nightclubs and and bars being un-Islamic, why don't you take it up with the authorities?

Yes Al, the pedophilic political party in Amsterdam has so much relevance to this discussion. So does the situation in Iraq, East Timor or the earthquake in Indonesia.

You know, it's alright to shut up once in a while, when you can't relate to a discussion. We all know you're not the "type" to go to a nightclub or a bar.
Do you think anyone cares though?

Let me all remind you, we're talking about racism; fun to know there are more people here actually pro-racist than otherwise. Hahaha.

Del and Alleged Anon Blonde:
Petty, petty people. I suggest you go back to high school and demand your money back.
Your arguments are exemplary.

Alleged Anon Blonde,

Get over the frikkin moniker hahaha.
I'll call myself Bill or Ted the next time to be taken more seriously.

Note: Funny, I don't recall saying you're petty and possibly stupid based on your appearance. I think the other posters were?
You could be a big hairy ape for all I care.

Eh, I'm falling into the same trap I was preaching against. This convo, going nowhere.

Yes, Dubai certainly isn't an Islamic country. But, I dont know how many of you have bothered reading the constitution of the UAE? Yes, they do have one! Or for that matter, even heard their national anthem? There are pledges and die-hard promises to follow Islamic injunctions and take pride in our way of life being Islam and our law being the Qur'an.

Humans deviate so there is nothing new here. Good hearted souls are still busy trying to carry out the original pledge of allegiance as per the constitution and anthem of this country. Change will come, in sha Allah Al-Azeez.

Dear (?) BreastImplants, to you I can only retort by stating my unwilligness to insult my own intelligence and get entangled in a futile diatribe with you.

“Couldn’t hack it in London moved to Hong Kong - Types”

I’m not a Muppet trying to re-live the colonial good old days’“more tea Sabu” and all that although I know the type well – besides I’m “politically black”. I can also describe myself as mixed race (black African, white European parents). Where I’m from the UK I’m arguably viewed by many as “racially” the bottom of the food chain. However I speak Arabic and some of us “mixed race types” depending on the gene lottery actually look “Arab-ish” I look very Arab-ish and speak Arabic. So depending on the eye of the beholder, when in Dubai I go from bottom feeder to T-Rex. In the UK I have witnessed some very racist attitudes towards the "afro carib" from the “sub con” who in the UK were arguably psycho-socially situated well above the “Afro Caribbean” on the food chain at least until 9/11 hmmm.

Anyway it was very strange for me to experience sub cons being deferential to me and calling me sir like they really meant it. As well as whitey not clutching her handbag when I went past, in fact she acted like I had something for her! My challenge now is not to become deluded black expat tosser or bleeding heart liberal and over empathise with the sub con "struggle". I can just see myself donning shilwar khamis and bindi, boycotting the clubs with my sub con brethren, and saying things like some of my best friends Indian.

On a serious note racism hurts all parties. Its really in everyone’s best interest to reduce, contain, legislate against, as much as possible. If the Arab is so enamoured with imitating the west as many of the previous posts have alluded to, then eventually we will get some enlightened (no superiority of Arab over Non Arab) type policies and legislation - which belive it or not is also an Islamic ideal documented 1400 yrs before the Race Relations Ammendment Act ... and I have a dream that one day little sub con boys and girls will hold hands with little White, Arab, and African boys and girls and say free at last free at last free at last…

I am concerned about working in Dubai now that I have read these posts. I am a financial services professional and a woman of color. I am Black American, mixed with European and Native American. Exotic looking to most. I am light skinned but wonder if my race is going to impede my ability to ad value there? Should I add blond highlights to accentuate my European features (it's not good for my hair)? Does it really make that much of a difference? I realize it should not, but that is the way of the world outside the US and Western Europe. I am proud of my heritage, but understand the realities of the social situation.

I would like to chat with all kinds of expats working in Dubai. Please feel free to contact me at fxexchanger@yahoo.com

I find it rather weird that we have no complaints about white folk being disallowed into asian/arabic clubs. Is this because white folk don't want to go to them, or is it because they can walk in wherever they want. And to all those who moan about Rock Bottom asking for membership, I challenge you to do this:
Pay for the membership as they ask, and then DEMAND your membership card, that way you will never have this problem again, right?

I am not racist, I hate everyone equally

Man, everybody in here is spouting off about how insulted they are about being discriminated against, yet they think that their willingness and financial ability to waste large amounts of money on overpriced drinks and cover charges, somehow entitles them to feel superior to the "uncivilized palefaces". You use comments such as that, yet you have the nerve to call yourself unbiased and civilized?? Sounds like a justified inferiority complex to me.
