Sponsorshit

Is there anything more revoltingly transparent and mendacious than (usually rich, white, privileged) people raising "sponsorship" money so they can go and have an expensive adventure holiday while claiming it's for charity? Exactly how does it benefit African AIDS orphans or landmine victims for some twat to scale Everest or wank themselves into a transcendental frot in some remote Tibetan Monastery?

Allison and Elise are the latest. They plan to drive a Mini Cooper from Paris to Dubai, claiming it's all about "strengthening ties between the Middle East and Europe":

"We are still looking for sponsors: adventurous companies, people who will trust our project and our values."

"We are confident the generosity and leading vision of UAE companies will give us the last impulse to go."

What an apocalyptic pile of crap. You're clearly well-fed, well-dressed, and well-paid in your cushy paleface expat jobs (you wouldn't be sweating it out in the sandlands otherwise, would you?) If you want to do your self-proclaimed Thelma-and-Louise wanktrip from Paris to Dubai, then come up with the Dh29,000 funds yourself.

Drop the shit about bringing "a true image of the Middle East" to Europe. Are you taking any Middle Easterners with you in your (luxury) car? No. Even your sponsor admits it's just an "opportunity to have its name plastered across the countries the girls will travel through."

"Furthermore, all along our route, we will illustrate what Dubai's vision has taught us."

Sadly, it's only too clear what you have learnt from Dubai's "vision".

Wow, SD, you sound really pissed off with them.

It's terribly clear how stupid their "campaign" is. If anybody in Dubai wants to improve their city's image in Europe [or anywhere in the world for that matter], there are MUCH better ways to go about it.

Don't you just love this bit:

"We are confident the generosity and leading vision of UAE companies will give us the last impulse to go."

They need a last impulse to go! Not an impulse, they simply want someone else to pay for their road trip.

Wanktrip..Hahahahaahahaaha.

SD You are clearly jealous of these two beautiful adventurous, smart and hot girls.

Allison Amour and Elise Baverel will attempt to drive to Paris from Dubai by car, which they estimate should take them around 12 days, in a bid to strengthen ties between the Middle East and Europe.

They want to strengthen ties with europe, in other words, they are MARKETING DUBAI and not raising charity and I think this is a great way of getting all the publicity.

Secret Dubai aka SD, dont be jealous but support them !!!

So the modern Thelma and Louise, come to papa. My company wouldnt mind sponsoring such sports!

Is it me or is it just a pattern in Dubai to criticize anytime someone tries something different.
For all those in a rush to judge these two girls, let me tell you that getting well informed before opening this crap-box of yours (your mouth for slow thinkers...)is a must!

These two girls might be french but who tells you they are the rich daddy's girls chicks as you would like to think, who tells you they are those rich expat type of people trying to take advantage of dubai's lucrative charity business...

To begin with, they are going from Dubai to Paris and not the contrary (actually reading the articles properly to get the info right before the fight might help in the future...) and they're so not blonde!! And even so, what's with the blonde thing over here? Who decided to condemn all blondes to be the victim of all your self inflicted frustration and failures?

I am french, and if you would see the image that europe has in general of arab countries, I swear you'd join the reality-awakening group if there was one (one more thing to think about by the way instead of depicting how ugly dubai is) and help these girls adding value to their trip. Give them more ideas to develop their objective instead of being so badly inobjective...

At least they try and do something so the west can see that middle east is not a place where girls are forced into wearing a abaya and is actually a cool and fun place to live in. They try and do something and straight away are treated like whores, great! While they are putting it together, you are sitting behind your screens being jealous/unsupportive/unresourceful/impolite/inobjective/uninformed And if you think their trip could be more reflective of Dubai's life, please, step forward and I am sure your ideas will be welcome.

On this holly world cup day, live the supportive spirit!

Blogger secretdubai said...

And even so, what's with the blonde thing over here?

I have no clue. As far as I could tell in the picture, they were both dark-haired.

But if I was going to make some sort of "awareness" pigrimage from east to west, I'd start off by doing it on foot. I'd backpack. I'd stay at low-budget places, take thousands of photos, try to meet local people wherever possible (and translators permitting) and I'd blog every bit of it. Maybe I'd buy a small videocamera to make a short documentary at the end of it. Maybe the blog could even become a book.

I would save up the money myself for the cost of food, transport and accommodation, and anything extra people wanted to donate I would give to a named charity, which would be advertised on the blog.

And if it was hard, and shitty, and uncomfortable, I would try to remember that I wasn't doing this for a nice holiday, but to learn something, and to teach others something.

Maybe the businesspants.com people will sponsor them. They deserve each other.

As SD correctly points out, this is a pretty transparent way of getting someone else to pay for your holiday. Why, you ask, are they planning on doing the trip in 12 days? Because they've only got 2 weeks vacation coming.

If these women are as ditzy as they seem, good luck with Iran and Eastern Turkey. Anyway, how slow of a newsday would it have to be for them to get any coverage anywhere that has actual news? This is, if possible, less interesting than Angelina Jolie's baby. Of course, they might manage to get themselves arrested or taken hostage or something. I suppose that'd be good for a few inches.

It doesn't matter an iota that they're

c) In a mini
But there doesn't seem to be any game plan on how Dubai's image is going to be given a makeover within 10 days!
Reminds me of one of those "Before" and "After" fashion makeover columns in the dailies. e.g. We chose light florals to bring out Dubai's skin tone, and a light bronzer to accentuate the emirate's cheekbones while disguising the prominent Burj al Arab protrusion

I would have figured a trip to bring awareness to the Middle East would actually involve a Middle Eastern country. The route appears to start in Dubai, but their next stop is Iran, which means they will travel through Turkey and on to Europe. I guess they meant awareness of the Greater Middle East, as there are no Arab countries on their route except the UAE.

Just a quick add; sorry I missed this earlier - they're not going for a holiday, one (or both, but the other wasn't sure) of them is actually going back to paris for good. Not sure where the figure of 29,000 dh came from but it should be enough to see them back to france in relative luxury. Mind you if I could find a way of someone paying my return to the uk I'd probably do it too....

If they actually paid for the trip themselves, and their "essentials" didn't include a free camera, free laptop and free ipod, then I'd have some semblance of respect for them.

Though I'd still think their trip is bogus and ineffectual, I'd wish them all the best.

p.s. If they're crossing through Iran and Turkey, and think their only worry is having the proper toilet paper, they should do a bit more research on their destinations. I sincerely don't want to read the news next month to find out they've been gangbanged by angry mullahs.

Oh, pull the other one. You're not just stereotypes, you're a bloody comedy film, "Road to Paris" or perhaps "Dubai Vacation."

How do you imagine that two expat females in short skirts driving across Europe listening to their MP3 players is going to "bring to Europe a true image of the Middle East: its hospitality, openness and cultural wealth"?

I admit, you'll have much more luck with this, "Furthermore, all along our route, we will illustrate what Dubai's vision has taught us." Assuming that "Dubai's vision" has taught you that "there's a sucker born every minute," I'm sure the message will come through loud and clear.

Don't get me wrong, I admire the chutzpah. You're trying to run an amusing scam and I wish you the best of luck. But don't take yourself or your absurd project too seriously. If you do, you're even bigger fools than your vict . . . err, sponsors.

How nice that you both enjoyed your trip at other people's expense! You're right - if other people do it, that must make it ok! There can't be anything wrong with something if other people do it, surely?

It's really nice that at such a difficult time as this when most of us are feeling quite down about the Middle East and Lebanon and people suffering that you have your lovely holiday memories to take your mind off things. It's the perfect time for you to mention them and bring a little sunshine in to all our lives as we bask vicariously in your happy memories rather than remember the more serious and tragic aspects of the Middle East. Forget Iraq - here's to a road trip to Paris with all smiles along the way!

You go, girls! Let's all emulate you and go on lovely car trips at other people's expense, actual charity work and fundraising is so blah and boring, isn't it?

You have no idea, do you, how fucking sick you make me and nearly everyone else who has read this? The fact that you revel and gloat in your own ghastliness is just the final nail in the coffin of public opinion of you.
