Hanging on the telephone
Warm congratulations to two Chinese men who managed to make US$1.4 million worth of free phone calls through some cunning illegal telephone rigging.
In any Western country such a high figure would represent hundreds of thousands of hours calling premium rate sex-lines. But with the UAE's extortionate monopoly telco charges, it was probably no more than a couple of ten minute off-peak calls to Shanghai.
Even warmer congratulations should be extended to Brigadier Al Mazeina and his boys for only taking a year to track the men down.
But the warmest congratulations of all go to the WTO, for finally forcing the Big Golf Balls to liberalise and allow IP telephony. If poor Wong and Chang had only managed to hide out for a couple more months, they would have been running a legal business.
