Sheikhs' cakes

"They had absolutely nothing to say. They're Swiss bankers - what do you expect them to say? They're boring."

A frazzled hack rants into his mobile as he dashes through the crowds at a conference. This week is the HotelHell2005 expo, with various assorted side seminars and forums. Bigwigs from exotic locations wielding numerous glossy brochures but scant free media tickets are roaming wild through the city, dragging the unwilling to their booths and press conferences.

By a stroke of luck, entry into the VIP majilis is achieved for an award "photo opportunity" between a couple of uber-Sheikhs: the Citibank one and the airline one. By an even more brilliant stroke of luck, they leave in a swish of white robes - retainers hurrying behind - after no more than thirty seconds.

Leaving the gleaming platters of sheikhly cakes and dates set before them totally untouched. Succulent squares of dark chocolate brownie. Fresh blueberry petit-fours. Strawberries dusted with pure gold leaf.

A right royal tea-party for the bored and hungry press.
