Sandwich of doom
"It's come to that time of year now when I stop eating shawarmas," states Bob, one of the UAE's most eminent trade mag hacks.
"Once the temperature gets to 40 degrees, that's when I stop."
The conversation, taking place in the gentle land of Oman, is sparked by the UAE's latest urban legend, the AIDS-infected shawarma:
One of the e-mails starts with a warning: "Dear All, beware of eating shawarma on the roadside."
It then goes on to tell the story of a 10-year old boy who was diagnosed with the deadly condition when he fell sick 15 days after eating a shawarma.
The letters say the cook had a nick in his finger, and while cutting the meat blood from the finger spread on the food.
Cue doctors facing a deluge of panicked patients. They need not worry - the grease and white flour will do them in long before any fictional ingested immuno-virus. Twenty per cent of the adult population of the UAE have diabetes, four times the rate of the rest of the world.
The reason? Fat, lazy, greedy people stuffing their genetically-predisposed selves with white rice, white flour, white bread, and a mountain of sugary stuff. If it wasn't so funny to see walking tents waddling up and down the shopping malls, it might actually be tragic.

Well, what i would suggest is a change in the school diet (Emphasis on health) and some educational courses for housewives and mothers regarding dieting and eating.
