Cloak-and-dagger consulate

Kiki's colleague Deedee may be able to make that phonecall more quickly than she hoped. Because Israel has apparently secretly set up a low-level diplomatic office in Dubai, according to Yediot newspaper, as reported by the Associated Press:

Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom did not deny the report in the Yediot Ahronot daily, saying instead "I prefer to discuss the things we do in an open manner."

A Foreign Ministry official speaking on condition of anonymity refused to give details of the office, citing security concerns. But he said there are two or three Israelis currently based in Dubai.

Reaction here will certainly be interesting. Officially, Israeli nationals "may not enter" the UAE, and anyone with an Israeli stamp in their passport is usually also denied entry:

Yediot reported the office was opened after a year of secret talks. During the talks, several Foreign Ministry officials secretly traveled to Dubai, the newspaper said.

India issues you a different passport if you want to go to Israel keeping in mind the difficulty of getting into some countries if you have a Israeli stamp on your passport.

That however did not stop them from posting Ranjan Mathai to Qatar. Mathai was India's ambassador to Israel before he got posted to Qatar.

Wonder how that went down with the authorities!

An Aside: Nice blog. Enjoy reading it. But you slipped up when you clubbed Buddhism and occult together. Buddhism is anything but an occult.

I don't think it should be a big deal now. It's not just an Israeli stamp that will stop you from entering. Most Muslim countries do not permit Jews to step on their soil, but think about this: Most, if not all, western nation passports do not have a "Religion" category. That means the person could be of any religion and there's no point in questioning him/her upon entry as that would be pointless. Which means, there are countless Jews in this country already.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are secret Jewish organizations here, along with a handful of covert foreign intelligence agencies.

akaround peg: I wasn't actually trying to imply that Buddhism was "occult"! I should have probably phrased it "some occult or possibly Buddhist sign".

I wonder if school books are still blacking out any reference to IL. I remember lookin at the the map and wondering what that country is with the name blacked out.

It's time for Arab countries to grow up and stop playing these silly "silent treatment" games with Israel. Look-- the country, and it's people, are a part of the Arab World whether we like it or not.

Blocking access to .il websites does not help us in any way; on the contrary, it hurts us. If your rival has access to more info than you, regardless of how "controversial" that information is, then he is automatically ahead of you. Sorry, but that's the way the world works.

(Personally I'm completely against Etisalat's censorship of anything--i.e. the "Proxy Of Death"--because it has been proven time and time again that censorship is one of the worst laws you can force on people...but that's another issue for another time.)

Anyways, yes there are MANY jews in this country, and no it doesn't bother me.

To those who disagree, think about it this way: if it still bothers you, wouldn't you prefer to know that jews live here, and tolerate them even if you don't like it? or would you rather deal with an invisible enemy?

Well actually those goosh are an invisible enemy; since the soviet block started implosing they've kept on rushing like ants anywhere they could. i've already been threatened by those rats in dubai for dark reasons and having more of them isn't such a great idea. slowly they come, secretly they settle, slowly they found their little racism, slowly they spread their disgusting tears, that apartheid they developped and that we should accept. Now that they have a so-called country, they should stick to it like flies glue to the shit. Sometimes i wait for iran to grow up as a counter power in this region...

Pax -

Your anti-Semitism is so typical and grotesque. People who happen to be Jewish - and I have quite a few Jewish friends - are just people. Their "secret" settlement is just the arrival of humans and no more sinister than would be, say, the presence of Muslims in New York City. You need to wake up and stop your idiotic stereotyping; it's time to live in the greater world. That's what Dubai is all about, isn't it: everyone can live together, make money, and drive like an idiot.

I thought there were Jews in Oman, a small group but there none the less. Am I mistaken?

Oman I hadn't heard of, but there is definitely a Jewish community in Yemen. As I understand it they are very poor people.

I really dont think this is a topic worth deliberating about. Israelis are a naitonality just like the rest 120 who have every right to live here if they're ready to pay the rising rents.

Well maybe is it time for you "anonymous", to make a real difference between Jews and israelis...
Fortunately all Jews are not israelis, like all Muslims are not extremists...
One day, i can hear it coming, the ones critisizing israelis will be called anti-Semits !
Jews should be free to live anywhere in Arabia, not israelis!

correct me if im wrong....the word israelis started from Abraham while the word jewish from Moses..historically...the muslims and israelis share the same geneology..offsprings of Abraham..from Haggar and Sarah..in that sense...they are both rightful owners of whatever they are fighting since day 1..

re: black feline

Kind of. Muslims and Jews are descendents of Ishmael and Isaac respectively...

But basically yes, we are brothers/cousins/whatever. But then, aren't we all? (not in the cheesy hippy sense, but genetically speaking).

You shouldn't be surprised. Think about it: almost all ethnic conflicts are ironically between the most similar peoples. India-Pakistan, Russia-Chechnya, Israel-Palestine, Lebanon-Syria, Ireland-UK.

Oh shut up you know it's true.
