Cannibal candy of Sharjah

Cretins of the week: "Mothers in Sharjah":

SHARJAH — Mothers in Sharjah have expressed their displeasure over the availability of a gummy candy shaped like human and animal gums with teeth and other body parts in the supermarkets.

Are these women really so incredibly stupid and poorly educated that they seriously believe a few sweets will "lead to cannibalism"?

"Some children don't understand what is wrong or right. They find it exciting to eat human parts and believe they are monsters. This may develop into a psychiatric problem later on," said a parent.

Hopefully it will, and these children will eat their cretinous parents, thus raising the average IQ in Sharjah by about fifty points.

OK, I'm the first to admit that the West has a lot of social problems. Happily, I can report that cannibalism is not among them.

Anon @ 5.14 - could you just stand back and read again what you have written? You cannot blame all of your ills on the west. The middle east is vecoming more of a consumer throw away society than most parts of the west. After all, who is responsible for a child's upbringing - manufacturer's of candies or parents. You cannot just blame other people, take a look in the mirror. When you refer to crime you need to thik carefully. In most western countries crimes are recorded and those statistics are published. Crimes such as driving without insurance, registration, licence etc, are all recorded in the west. When was the last time you saw someone here pulled over for having and expired registration - I'll tell you, I've been here 8 years and I haven't seen one. Just remember, parents are responsible for their kids, no one else, not maids, security guards, shop assistants or nay one else. Get with the program, take some responsibility and stop balaming everyone except the real cause.

HEY HERE IS A CANNIBAL STORY FOR THE ANONYMOUS WHO SAID DOESN'T HAPPEN !

KASSEL, Germany -- A German court has convicted a self-confessed cannibal of manslaughter and jailed him for eight and a half years, ending a sensational trial that fascinated and appalled the country.

The court in Kassel ruled that Armin Meiwes, a 42-year-old computer expert who met his victim on the Internet, had no "base motives" in the crime -- sparing him a murder conviction.

Meiwes admitted killing and carving up Bernd Juergen Brandes but insisted it was all consensual.

Prosecutors wanted a life term, calling the man a "human butcher" who acted to "satisfy a sexual impulse." Defense lawyers said the victim volunteered to be killed and eaten, therefore the crime should be classified as a mercy killing.

They wanted him to be convicted of "killing of request," a form of illegal euthanasia carrying a sentence of six months to five years.

Among the evidence examined by the court was hours of video footage taken of the events of March 10, 2001.

As well as gripping the country with the power of its graphic detail, the case has also turned an uncomfortable spotlight on a hitherto unacknowledged world of cannibalism and extreme fetishism.

Meiwes told the court how he met the man via the Internet and arranged a meeting.

During the trial Meiwes' lawyer, Harald Ermel, cited e-mails in which the victim insisted on being killed and eaten. One read: "There's absolutely no way back for me, only forwards, through your teeth."

Meiwes' video of the killing, in March 2001, persuaded even prosecutors to concede the death was voluntary.

Media and observers were kept outside while the tape was shown to the court. One newspaper said a woman almost fainted during the film, which shows Meiwes talking to the severed head while he disembowels the body, hung from a hook.

Emotionless and calm, Meiwes recalled how he began the killing by cutting off the victim's penis at the victim's request, how they fried it in a pan and tried but failed to eat it.

Meiwes then told how they waited for hours until the victim, weakened by loss of blood from his wound, fell unconscious.

Meiwes then stabbed him to death, cut him in pieces and ate 20 kilograms of him over the following months, defrosting pieces portion by portion. Psychiatric experts have found Meiwes to be sane and fit to stand trial.

He told the court he had fantasized since puberty about consuming a man to deal with the emptiness left by the departure of his father.

Meiwes said he regretted the deed and would not repeat it. "I had my big kick and don't need to do this any more," he told the court.

Meiwes says he is writing a book on how he came to live his ultimate fantasy.

CNN's Walter Rodgers said: "Most Germans are aghast yet fascinated at the idea of a cannibal in their midst. This is not supposed to happen in a tidy, democratically ordered German society. And yet it did."

Please tell me if germany is in the west. thank you.

I agree with elzubeir, also along with this new direct style you have a new readership of people that previously couldn't understand, which is where these new anonymous stupid comments come from.

As for this whole "candy shaped gum", I used to eat those when I was a kid.
BELIEVE IT OR NOT, I AM NOT A RAGING CANNIBAL!, well only on weekends, I actually do find the odd homeless person and eat their teeth and fingers. A rare delicacy.

And are these mothers so weak that they can't even stop their 5-10 year old children from purchasing them? You are so lucky in the Middle East, you can have children without worry, Etisalat loves your children more than you, screw parental responsibility, blame it on someone else. It always works.

I warned them several times not to buy them because they are disgusting.
So they tried to discipline their children, but were too useless at it that they had to blame a company?

Too bad Etisalat can't proxy our diets eh?

I'm sure the only reason the children enjoy eating the human shaped (no nether region parts yet?) sweets so much is because it pisses off their mother.

When we see the fucked up west...and their fucked up children..we do look at what they bring to our culture with care.
I love this attitude towards the "evil west" and their "loose moral code", NEWS FLASH: you live off the evil west, your money comes from their, you provide them with oil which makes their cars go putt putt.

Everyone I know that displays this "evil west" attitude happily sips Pepsi-Cola while dining on KFC/Mc Donalds/Burger King/Starbucks, while playing with their Nokia phones and their iPods and their Microsoft Windows installations or their Mac OS X installations, or even their linux installations, while listening to the "morally degrading" music of the west. As for the "evil west" - have you compared divorce rates in this region and the rest of the world recently? Try here

And here's a clue: when your region is criticised, try to find a better defence that "the west is evil!" "the west is corrupt!" We're not talking about the west. We're talking about fked up people in your society. Grow up and stop trying to avert responsibility all the time.

We also consider the Danish cartoonists fked up people, while you are free to think what you want of them.

Heres the thing, some people e.g. murderers, rapists, can be considered messed up by anyone with some common sense

However, the "Sharjah mothers", the Danish cartoonists, etc. are people who are not universally considered fked up.

I just read something in the newspaper about a US$ 265 million spaceport in the UAE! NO, it's not in Dubai; its being planned to be built in white-dubaians favorite punching bag, RAK! All the "hate" is paying off, I guess.

I think SD created this blog for light-hearted jokes about this part of the World, but I guess some of the jokes don't sit too well by a lot of people. There is a very fine line between joking about something and offending others. But, people these days do not give hoot about other peoples' sentiments. That's pretty sad, if you ask me.

I am cool with SD poking fun at occurences in Dubai as long as she is not offending anyone (which she has on a few occassions). But I wonder if SD and other westerners who find this place, and Muslim at large, weird are making an effort to understand why people behave in this part of the World as they do? For example, Islam is the Western media's favorite scapegoat. Just like ordinary people blame most ills on the West, the media in the West blames every ill on Islam. So I wonder if people take the time of verifying such claims and independantly doing any research on Islam and Muslim polity?

Finally, Samuraisam, I am not attacking SD! So please dont write back something macho in defense of SD. Western women seem to be better fending for themselves. It's when their come in that it becomes really pansy. And whats the fixation with Etisalat and their proxy? Just get a job at DIC and you can d/l all the porn you want to!

Can't they just not allow their kids from eating these candies if they don't want them. You can't block everything that might harm your kids from them, this is not the way of life.

"Mobiles are not good for kids and because my child wants one and I can't say no to him I suggest mobiles shouldn't be allowed in this country. Please."

yes, even the kind of candy they eat when they are in KG affects that.

Wait, maybe these women can't and that's why we have all these... kids.

This is stupid, I grew up eating all these candies and I never ate a whole person or sucked anyone's blood or broke their teeth, only a bite every now and then. :)

As Al-Republican points out, we are getting the mega-spaceport built here in RAK, and as yet no thread for SD on the matter! I guess if it doesn't involve camels, goats, weirdos trying to jump to the moon off a high building for a meeting with GW, women beating up their husbands in the streets outside local "massage" parlours or other sorts of wackiness, then it doesn't deserve a mention.

Come on, SD, there is lots to play with there:

RAK'S getting a spaceport - Well, we always knew they were from another planet!

RAK has selected the first astronaut to blast off from their new spaceship: A 2-year-old goat called Tuffaha.

I am sure all you sophisticated Dubaians can find much to chortle about on this one.

Actually, Eastern Superiority, if such a thing can exist, is best displayed via Dubai's continuous growth as a trade hub. After all, the Middle Eastern man has been known longest for his skills as a trader and a merchant.

Having said that, I don't believe in East vs. West in today's global economy. Everyone competes against everyone. You cannot simply choose sides and sit on your side of the fence. Everyone's got ladders and people are all over the place. It's a whole different ball game.

SD, on a serious note though, I am tempted to stop visiting my favorite blog if the quality of comments does not get out of its current slump. I realize it is a huge headache to moderate it.. but it is seriously becoming more of a 14-year olders' playground than what it used to be.

Here's the thing, anon@20:17. You've basically used one entry where I mock some misguidedly paranoid mothers to have a huge rant - and a rude rant, frankly - about expats in general.

You've made various obscene allegations about what I assume are "western" mothers.

I suggest you get a clue. The reason I rant about certain things here is because I actually believe and wish they could be better. Which indicates not only that I have faith in this place to improve, but that I actually care that it does. Otherwise, I could just gloat. But I don't. I get angry because it bothers me that people are dying on the roads, getting evicted from their properties, not getting paid for months on end. I don't think these things are funny or trivial. I think they are wrong. And I think that we all have a moral duty to address them.

Actually read through my blog and notice the many times I've given praise where due and made constructive criticism.

But I doubt you will do that. Sadly, you're one of the all-too-many "victim mentality" people around here. You can't take any criticism, so you just fling mud back (and far worse mud than was ever flung at you). Either that, or you are just not intelligent enough to really understand what is being said here.

Stupid or closed-minded: I really don't know what is worse.

Can you please explain how are you going to make the change when you are just posting this here on the blog...where people who can make the change wont read it...could you explain it?
Second...what mothers choose to expose their children to or not is really up to them...whatever you think or I think...I am a doctor and to tell you the truth..its always their call..and when mothers refuse antibiotics or certain vaccines I dont say they are stupid...at the end of the day...nobody will love their kids more than them..not you..not me.

And for your information..these topics that you are raving about is a concern and has been addressed to the people in power by "the stupid locals"..but have been ignored..so goodluck making a change in this sad blog.
Maybe you will feel a little smarter..opinionated woman...by talking the talk...but to be honest..I think this blog is all about you...and nothing about the well being of my country...

What an amazingly hypocritical request, given that you used "fuck" and "damn" in your previous post! And tried to imply that (western? non-Sharjah?) mothers sleep around and don't feed their kids, which has zero to do with the topic in hand.

You also made the assumption that this article was about local mothers. I actually assumed, it being in the English-language KT, it referred to expat mothers. Either way, I didn't specify, I just said "Sharjah mothers" like the article did.

As you say, you are a doctor, so you can't be that stupid. I realise this blog upsets you, and the fact that I am able to write it. But do bear in mind I make continual effort to respect your country's laws, which is why - so far - I haven't been arrested. As something with an apprecation of media law and ethics, I also avoid defaming anyone.

Yes: the overall tone might be critical and negative, but it's my blog and that's my choice. You really don't have to read it if it upsets you so much.

Can you please explain how are you going to make the change when you are just posting this here on the blog...where people who can make the change wont read it...could you explain it?

I have no clue who reads this blog, or how important they are, but according to my stats there are visitors from "important" places (though they could of course be lowly staff working at those places). I doubt they pay much attention to my dull rantings, but you never know.

OK - SOME CHANGES

Abusive comments are getting out of hand (and by this I mean obscene) on both sides of the argument. As a result, I'm disabling anonymous commenting, at least for now.

Blogger is free to join, so it doesn't prevent anyone from commenting. It just means that you need to sign up, which will give you a recogniseable identity.

This means that not only can people follow more easily who is debating with who, but troll commenters can be more easily tracked and reported to Blogger.

You don't have to give your names: you can use nicknames and pseudonyms. Apologies to the many polite, pleasant anons - both the dissenters and the assenters - but it has become necessary. The next step would be comment moderation, and I really don't want to have to do that.

Mr.Elzubeir, as much as I respect your overtly intellectual mind and expert armchair analysis of posts on this blog, surely, you must have heard of "free speech", haven't you? I beg of you, your majesty, to understand that this is not your blog, and that others have the express right to comment whatever thy want, provided thay have an identity. Now how about registering yourself at blogger, my dear sir?

On a lighter note, much to thy majesty's chagrin, dare I say --we should start filming!Yes!.....
SD presents "CANNIBAL CANDY"
Starring-
Mohamed "14 yr olds playground inspector" Elzubeir
The Anonymous "I love my country for" Doc.
Balushi aka chicken genitals
& of course The Sharjah Mothers.

tobriander: one of the main problems I am having is that the majority of "dissenters" express themselves so badly. I realise it's an unfair playing field - this isn't a first language for many of them.

But so many of them genuinely don't seem to understand the point of the posts, or people's comments here, let alone the overall tone. I really don't know what to do. I can't explain anything to them, I can't appease them.

I've deleted some of the really obscene comments (endless expletives) but have left others as you can see (eg anon@05:14).

I think what they really want is for me to stfu (just as I want them to stfu!) So an impasse. But at the end of the day, this is "my" space, and there is nothing to stop them expressing themselves endlessly and fully in a blog of their own.

Any other suggestions you guys have would be very welcome. Several people have suggested disabling comments altogether, but it feels unfair to do that.

And it seriously alarms me that that woman is a doctor, with her appalling disturbing views on "western" mothers. I really hope her practice is confined to local women. I probably have too high expectations of doctors, but I have always believed they should be as open minded and non-judgemental as possible, at least in public.

Brilliant - thanks so much for signing up, Mohamed. I know it is a hassle (I have had to do the same for things like Typepad) so I do appreciate it. And thank you for your kind words.

I want to get this place back to more funny and less angry. Even when I rant, it's not supposed to be 100% fury (except in rare cases that really warrant it). For my part I plan to work on making the humour/satire/irony show through, so I don't just sound grumpy all the time ;)

I think you should post something more controversial than this, then enable comment moderation, and only allow the positive feedback....that will really leave some people ripping their hair out....hehe (yes, revenge, I know)

it would be great to take an effort and realize that most people from "our part of the world" are not as broad minded as you are.

I recognise this, but what am I supposed to do? I rarely if ever (for legal reasons) blog about an issue that isn't already in the papers first. Whether that's education, women's issues, crime, etc.

I freely admit I have lost my patience over certain things, one of them being the "blame the west" commenters, and the "go home" commenters. You are not one of those, and I really do appreciate your polite and kind reply.

Do bear in mind that I don't expect or demand people to share my opinion: yes I rant, and I argue, but underlying that is my belief that people have a right to disagree. And even more, that they have a right to express their disagreement.

Regarding personal attacks in the actual blog posts: these will be rare, for legal and ethical reasons. In the comments I feel freer to take someone to task. For the record: I don't see people here as universally backward or uncivilised. I do think that many people here - though it is NOT their own fault, as the government admits - are not so much uneducated as badly educated. The most senior government figures and educators continually emphasise the need for drastic improvement.

And I think this different style of education is why some people may find open debate and criticism difficult.

Thank you for your comments anyway.
