End torture now
Today is the International Day in Support of Survivors and Victims of Torture.
Few countries have a clean track record on torture: there are over 150 according to Tassc.org. And the UAE is among them. A recent Amnesty report highlighted:
"...a variety of charges from "incommunicado detention" of suspects, to allegations of "torture and cruel judicial punishments""
It doesn't matter whether torture is worse in country A or more widespread in country B, the fact that it exists anywhere is an abomination. It is no cause for glory that a nation's track record for torture is minimal: it is only a cause of shame that such a record exists at all.
Yes, progress has been made. Camel jockeys have been repatriated, albeit slowly. But there is more to do: here, and throughout the whole world. Because we are created equal, yet thousands of us live in terror, oppression, persecution, violence and victimisation at the hands of the rest of us.

Torture will never stop in the Middle East.
One has to only look at the fact that the indegenous population themselves generally doesnt care too much about human rights.
For a good time:

check out 25th June Issue of Campaign ME, On the last page - 'The Spin' says:
The Secret Dubai blog is currently carrying a large ad stating: "This Diary is anti torture". Which is nice, because up to that point The Spin had assumed she'd be in favour of it
harsha - I think they probably missed that it's a month-long campaign (though I didn't start at the beginning) against torture, which Blogs Against Torture is taking part in. And the graphic is because I am taking part in that, hence this entry. Several other UAE blogs are also taking part.
yep, very much aware of that.
Which probably they arent. Just thought I'd let you know.
Someone please tell those in detention in those "secret" US run prisons that it is End Torture Day! Oh wait, no one knows where those secret prisons really are - and the US can get away with anything it seems. Never mind then.
