Quite apart from the fact that it is possible to be a virgin and have a broken hymen, or to have spent a decade taking it up the back way and still count yourself a "virgin", the downgrading of the hymen may help destigmatise rape as a source of shame for a woman.

So it looks like nowadays being virgin is not a quantitative statement. i.e. you’re either one or not. It’s about how strong your virginity is…

I find nothing more indicative of a man's inadequacy and low self esteem than an insistence that his wife is a virgin, especially if he himself is not.

On the upside: it helps restore some sense of dignity to rape victims. But we all know the real reason why it's so popular is because our boys don't wait till marriage to keep the snakes in their tents and our women just don't keep their legs closed.

I read one article about hymenorrhaphy in one the magazine circulating within the entire UAE. As nurse, this is not new to me. I have seen a lot of female(young or even not-so young) who opted to choose this kind of operation just to save thier 'dignity'. But it is surprising to know that the Arab community is allowing the advertisement of this procedure.

I must say the vast majority, I will say over 95% of UAE local girls will be REAL virgins in their wedding night.
You might find my statements too "optimistic", but I say them confidently. I must also add that is a good thing. Call it selfish, backward or whatever, but for me the beauty of femininity is her exclusivity, and loyalty.

However of you look at the elite in this country, i.e mostly the moneyed and royalty, then I say you are talkinking about a completely different phenomena. Split hymens abound in there, a freeway on the wedding night. They know about it and are less hypocritical about it.
I would expect that demand will only be increasing now that we all have the ability to select the sex of our children in advance.

Honestly this is old news, and I think most native exapts may not find this "shocking”. Some (surely not all) Arab women, including Saudi, Emi and Indians/Pakistani’s - have been doing this for a while.
I am not saying this is right or wrong - it's their choice. I mean, Hollywood icons go under the knife and lie about it, lie about their age, have breast implants, liposuction etc all - so what's so "shocking" here?

I think that wether it be a boob job or restoring a hymen if women accept either it is just them submitting to opression and to ownership by men.

I have a friend that is a victim of rape by her stepfather since she was 5-6 years old, and the girl cannot tell her mother, because she fears of ruining the marriage, and that her half-siblings will have a separated family.
many men have proposed to my friend and she is rejecting in fear of anyone knowing the truth, and by that she will have no dignity. Now her family is pressuring her to get married and her wedding is around the corner.
