Fair cops

Dubai Police are among the best in the world.

According to... Dubai Police!

A huge round of applause to Lt General Tamim for winning such an outstanding self-accolade.

Meanwhile is anyone else slightly disturbed that "causing death to others" has only just been made a road rule?

Laissez-faire driving in the city is a thing of the past — something that has been made clear by the UAE government's new road rules which came into effect on March 1. New rules include "Causing death of others" to "Driving a noisy vehicle" and "Driving without spectacles or contact lenses."

What happened if you hit and killed someone before these rules were instated? Slap on the wrist?

What's fascinating is how the Khaleej Times and the Gulf Snooze reported it . Both, apparently by a "staff reporter" had exactly the same 5 paragraphs.

And of course it was 5 paras of lazy quoting, rather than incisive reporting

You can never be better served than by yourself. :)

I have nonetheless something good to say about Dubai Police. When I reported a theft in my car by phone few months back, they actually sent 2 police car over and they did a follow-up with me a few week after that. (Of course they didn't find anything but how do you locate a digital camera? I had no expectation).
If I compare that with police "back-home" where they would have tried to dissuade me from going to the police station, where I would have queued for hours until a barely literate typist would have pretended to file my report. I think Dubai police has a top notch service.

Now something bad: How many time have I seen a car zooming by a police car at twice the speed limit without effecting ANY kind of reaction. Patrol car are useless.

It's very nice they've implemented "new law", even if as always they barely understand why they are mimicking western countries but until the road patrol starts giving a fuck what's happening around them it's not going to change much.

btw, "staff reporter" means the actual reporter copy pasted a Press Release and didn't want to have his/her byline on it. Probably on request from a senior editor.

Thx, SD, for letting me post on your blog again ;-)

Indeed, Dubai Police is one of the best police forces in the world - Dubai is known as one of the biggest crime-free cities in the world. Let's not forget about 1k ppl settle in Dubai daily - gotta be some correlation.

indeed. one of worlds largest crime free city. with a huge local population all of 80,000. and some 2 million expats mostly terrorised and victims of hilarious rules and regulations from the govt and police and the builders mafia. where a swiss boy gets raped by an emirati and an egyptian doctor convinces the boy he was a homo anyways so why bother. all duly reported by an obliging gulf news and khaleej times. one among thousands of rapes here that got covered probably.

as for crimes, how about bachelors not able to stay in human inhabited areas, how about builders throwing out people to increase rent as and when they please.how about openly racial and preferential treatment all over, including any nightclubs. how about the privileged being able to take any drugs, but god forbid a poor guy has .0003 gms stuck in his shoe. rich can drink and drive, but not others

ridiculous set of legal and police rules copied from nearby countries, and practised in an even more ridiculous way. and lots of people to clap and say wow...the city of the next millenium. and papers to write only the censored versions. of course, it no wonder idiots belive what they are fed.

"Driving without spectacles or contact lenses."

Opticians should expect an increase in business as evidently everyone now needs glasses or contact lenses to drive.

Dubai Police are among the best in the world.

Step aside Bureau, ATF, DEA, HomeSec.
We're outsourcing our strong-arm to the best POHLEECE force in the world.

Humor aside, this guy's been known to put his foot in his mouth. Doesn't he know, the best keep their trap shut unless they're just a wannabe.

no, they are pretty good, i dont know if its cos of the tons of under cover cops around, or the fact that every corner has a camera on watching us, but crimes here always get sorted out within days if not hours! when it comes to traffic, not really, but other issues, yeah there pretty effective

Well, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought there was something strange about the source of that claim about Dubai police being the "best" - According to whom? Exactly. I think those red octagonal signs actually say "yield" in Arabic. But there are no cops around so who cares? Or even if there were - who cares?! Today I nearly rear-ended a dude who stopped at a flashing green light - right in plain view of a cop. Who cares? Not the police...

I hear rumours that if you report at the Dubai police that your husband/ male employer beats you up or rapes you, they generally just call the guy to say: "a woman from your household is at the police station and it looks pretty embarrassing, so if I were you, I'd come and pick here up."
Can anyone confirm that?
