Grin and bare it

Driven by enthusiasm, perhaps, for the UAE's new 160kmph speed limit, Dubai motorists are putting on quite an exhibition for traffic cops:

"A few days ago, I saw the radar picture of a young man naked and driving at very high speed. This picture was very embarrassing, and it was clear the young man had done it on purpose. He did not even bother to hide the number plate of his car.

"Another picture was of a woman who showed her breast to the radar while she was speeding. She covered her car number plate. I hope she gets punished," [a police source] said.

More modest young men and women are keeping their private body parts off-camera, instead "showing their fingers" to the radar cameras.

But pity the poor traffic cops in Sharjah, working a three-week month due to inadequate fuel rations:

"Most patrols finish their rations of fuel between the 23rd and 26th of the month," the source said.

Each police patrol vehicle usually carries two policemen but at the end of the month the number in each vehicle increases to four policemen," the police source told Gulf News.

Well you do know that the showing of fingers is a very naughty thing to do, and even farting in an elevator can get you a month in the lovely jail.

FARK.com: (1507884) Radar picks up naked man at high speed, one exposed breast, and several one-fingered salutes. Welcome to Dubai

Jesus. Farting can get you sent up the river? Remind me not to visit Dubai for any reason whatsoever, I've been farting continually for the last two weeks. God knows why. Perhaps I need a curry - you know, purge the system...

Dear Emirati, it happens to be true. Disrespectful behaviour, they call it.

Give me the proof of this or your statement is invalid, present me with a source or you lose all legitimacy in this discussion.

I think the reference is to a entry I posted here for which I can't provide a newspaper (or other) link, as it came directly from a friend of the person involved.

Urinating in Public would constitute a fine at most

And you are telling me that passing gas a far less serious offense is punishable by a month in jail ?

False Rumors and unconfirmed reports not only damage the reputation of the country regarding them (I can imagine how much various lies have cost the UAE in terms of tourism dollars) but also damage the reputation of the sites on which they are posted, more research and professionalism is in order.

My source is a British guy who was in jail when this unfortunate was incarcerated. Mr Emirati, you must understand that I would not make this up - I want Dubai to succeed as much as anybody, but as long as things like this continue to happen then there is a perception problem.

It's not passing gas per se: it's the fact that a lady was offended by it happening in front of her, and thought it was a deliberate insult (when most probably it was just an accident).

Kind of like stubbing your toe and swearing, and someone walking past thinks you are swearing at them.

Present me with the first name of the person jailed, the jail he was located in and the time period which he was jailed in and I will see to it personally that I use my connections to bring whatever parties responsible to justice.

That is a very kind offer - keefieboy may want to take you up on it - however I don't personally know the man involved.

I think keefieboy and I might be referring to two separate incidents: the one I wrote about apparently happened in a supermarket (not a lift) and was some time ago.

Asked a Friend from the Abu Dhabi Police if someone could be arrested for something like that, he said its impossible...

It seems that the officer wrote it down as harassment, seems since a lady was involved he was thinking with a brain (and not the one in his head)

Dear Emarati, you are getting youself extremely wound up over almost nothing. I am deeply offended by your original comment "BS keefieboy, stop spewing your vile biased unbased self-righteous propaganda." Propaganda? I'm only telling it like it is. Self-righteous? Have you ever read my blog? Vile - get a grip. Unbased...I didn't make this up.

And I'm also upset by your more recent comment "I will see to it personally that I use my connections to bring whatever parties responsible to justice." They've already been through the judicial process and the result was the guy got a month in jail. Your threatened use of wasta does not change anything. The guy has had a month in jail. End of story, cannot be undone.

All I was trying to do was point out was that the punishment far outweighed the 'crime'.

And secretdubai will no doubt be pleased to know that I will not continue this discussion on her site. If you want to continue this thread, post a comment to one of the stories on my own blog (www.webmasterdubai.blogspot.com), but please do me the honour of reading some of it before you post, so that you can get some idea of where I'm coming from. I am not anti Emarati, I am fully in favour of Emaratis being able to grow their own country. I fully support the aims of the Gubment, but I have some issues with the police and the judicial system. 'sall.

All for a fart...?

"The Historic Fart"

"They recount that in the city of Kaukaban in Yemen there was a man named Abu Hasan of the Fadhli tribe who left the Bedouin life and became a townsman and the wealthiest of merchants. His wife died while both were young, and his friends pressed him to marry again.
Weary of their pressure, Abu Hasan entered into negotiations with the old women who procure matches, and married a woman as beautiful as the moon shining over the sea. To the wedding banquet he invited kith and kin, ulema and fakirs, friends and foes, and all of his acquaintances.

The whole house was thrown open to feasting: There were five different colors of rice, and sherbets of as many more; kid goats stuffed with walnuts, almonds, and pistachios; and a young camel roasted whole. So they ate and drank and made merry.

The bride was displayed in her seven dresses -- and one more -- to the women, who could not take their eyes off her. At last the bridegroom was summoned to the chamber where she sat enthroned. He rose slowly and with dignity from his divan; but in do doing, for he was over full of meat and drink, he let fly a great and terrible fart...."
